Communication

We can work with your child to do things such as:

  • Ask for items and activities using a preferred communication system (Speaking, AAC, PECs, and ASL!)

  • Work on conversational skills

  • Work on self-advocacy skills (e.g. saying no, asking for space, needing a break)

Social Skills

  • Learning how to play with others (Tolerating sharing, engaging in conversations, taking turns, asking for adjustments)

  • Tolerating changing of rules (increasing flexibility and tolerance of non-preferred scenarios)

  • Responding to feedback from peers (when others say stop, they stop; reducing rigidity)

  • Learning about others (likes, dislikes, building relationships)

Emotional Regulation

  • Decreasing tantrums (crying, screaming, flopping, throwing items)

  • Reducing self-injurious behavior (Head banging, scratching, biting)

  • Reducing aggression (biting others, scratching others, punching others)

  • Teaching functional appropriate behaviors (asking instead of hitting, saying no, instead of running away, and more)

Safety Awareness

  • Learning when it’s safe to cross the street

  • Learning what to touch and what not to touch

  • Learning to discern between friends, acquaintances, and strangers

  • Learning to tolerate waiting

Independence

  • Learning how to follow routines (school transitions, daycare transitions, following one step or multi-step instructions)

  • Once a skill is taught, we allow them to attempt those skills independently so they rely less on us and more on the skills they have learned!

  • Being able to adapt to new scenarios (demonstrating flexibility)

  • Adjusting to new people and settings (learning that the same behaviors work everywhere they go!)

Social Outings (Going out!)

  • We are able to go on outings with you and your family to add natural situations to learn from.

  • Grocery stores: perfect areas to work on identifying objects, following a routine, following a list, asking for help from grocery staff, the list goes on!

  • Museums: Learning to take turns, learning to wait for others, playing with others, approaching others in a social context!

  • Parks: Learning to follow safety instructions, Following hand gestures from a distance, approaching others to engage in play, and more!
